Picked up a few frames from my Humboldt Park guy this weekend. One had cottered cranks, which of course had to go. I’ve been lucky with these in the past, dealing with the pins on the Raleigh Record for example, but not this time. Everything that could go wrong did. If you’re ever faced with the challenge of removing cottered crank pins, save yourself the trouble and use the “pedal axle” method right from the start. Remove the axle (spindle) from an old petal. The axle is the same brownish color as the bb spindle– presumably some sort of forged/rolled heat-treated steel. It works well as an incredibly tough driver, and is thin enough to pop the pins right out!
